The Age of Humans (Heroes):

The nature of the elves is not in change. They are long-lived and mostly temperate. They take time on all things, considering all aspects of a matter ere acting. It was this very aspect of being that doomed them to twilight, for they did not comprehend the force that would rise out of mystery. The hum’An’Dar, at first only a few, grew more rapidly than any other folk in the history of the world. In the blink of an elven eye they had gone from a tiny little band to a populous people in their own right. Soon, they were pushing the elves back, settling elven lands as their own, and changing the face of the land.

So it came to pass that the elves eventually, over several millennia, abandoned almost all of their ancient and glorious cities and fell back to the capitol of Silv’An’Dar. Most of their cities they warded and hid away, for their Seers and most mighty of oracles foretold that the elves would rise again when that which was sundered of magic was made whole once more. Thus were the elvenkin content to pull back, gather their strength, and wait. They are nothing, if not patient. They spent their time in learning and solitude, closing their doors to the other kins, and mostly to the humans.

Of humans, they were both fascinated and horrified. They, at first, tried to befriend the fiery and short-lived people, for they were new and enigmatic. However, they found that humans did not live long enough to gain any real level of understanding, and their kindred changed too quickly for the elves to keep up with them. That, and they seemed to have an inherently confrontational nature that led them to make war both among themselves and other peoples. To keep themselves safe, the elves removed themselves from any kind of active role in the world at large, hiding away even fair Silv’An’Dar to any save very few. They watched and waited, keeping an eye on human affairs but getting not involved.

However, eventually, after many millennia, humans could no longer be completely ignored. They had covered the face of Phantara, carving out a civilization of their own upon the lands that had once belonged to the elves. They had many distinct cultures, kingdoms, and peoples, each vastly different from one another. And too, they had learned the power to be found in the harnessing of magic, and did so well, with reckless abandon. As ever with such kinds of folk who seem to endlessly pursue power and personal gain, humans fell prey to the dark side of magic, that evil force of unlight known as Necromancy. This death magic, a corruption of the cycle of magic and blasphemy against life was a quick rout to power, though it resulted often in madness. Even the elves were touched by this evil, for there were some among even them who desired this new power in magic.

It came to pass that great wars ripped asunder the kingdoms of the world, remembered to history as the Essence Wars. Essence was the power of life, the antithesis of Necromancy, and the power of light. Lines were drawn, and sides taken. Even some of the elves took part in these wars, for they knew that if the human kingdoms fell under the black shadow of Necromancers, it would not be long ere such folk looked upon the splendor of the elven kingdom with desire, before war would come to Silv’An’Dar itself. The Essence Wars spanned many centuries, taking on different forms and in different places. Through, mostly, the efforts of the humans, the wars were won, marginally, by those fighting for Essence. It was a costly victory, however, resulting in massive death tolls on both sides. Those who served Necromancy could not be destroyed completely however, and their numbers continued to plague all of the peoples of Phantara for centuries to come.

For the elves, the closing centuries of the Age of Humans were spent in watchful waiting. They knew that there were dark forces at work in the world, those who would see Necromancy and Chaos loosed upon the lands. But so too were there those who fought for good. Some among the elvenkin went out into the world to aid in this battle, both because they wished to safeguard their folk back home in Silv’An’Dar, and because they felt it the right thing to do. Though the elves as a people remained outside most of the goings on in the world, individuals were very active. The elves were not without compassion for the suffering for the lesser folk, tough not so benevolent as to become involved on a large scale. There was also the fact that they saw the closing of the age drawing near, and their own time of ascension once more come.

The closing decades of the Age of Humans were ones of war and strife upon the face of the land. Kingdoms fell apart, torn asunder from within, and the powers of both Essence and Necromancy moved about the land. The Seers of the elves knew that the time for the One Magic to be made whole once more was come, and so a quiet edict went out among those of the kindred about in the world beyond. The elves were called back to the city, that they might brave the coming destruction together. It was mandated that every elf, great and small, was to return. Those who refused the summons were to be branded traitors to the Blood… and considered no longer elven. They would be left to their fates, no better than the human rabble. The gates to the city were closed, and the elves waited. They did not wait long.

Great and ancient magics were let lose, and cataclysm once more struck the world. Queen Anvea, in order to shield her folk and the city from the force of the One Magic returning, gave up her mighty essence to protect her folk, and died. However, for the elves as a whole, it was a glorious new day… for the Age of Ascension was come at last.
